Improving workplace health & safety through collaboration
WE HAVE ASKED THE QUESTIONS SO THAT YOU DON’T HAVE TO. (Yes, we have got you covered!): Industry Expert POV (Point of View) regarding Automation in an organizations’ Safety Management no matter the Industry.
Business Models try to adapt, evolve and keep up with the fast-paced and ever changing trends in the industry. Many reasons are listed down and carefully studied before making these changes. An example is in the case of the Occupational Safety Industry together with the capabilities of Information and Technology. This duo have brought a different light into Digitization and Automation for this Industry.
In making that “shift” – no matter the industry, we know there are a lot of questions and thoughts that need answers and clarifications. Allow us to share with you the FAQs and Answers that covers this subject and all others so that you too can be enlightened.
Check out the conversation we had with ENGR. JOANNE S. DIONELA, ChE, AMIChemE, OSH Consultant and be able to RETHINK the way like she does when embracing a workplace Safety management in your organization that is Digitized and Automated.
Why do you think Organizations should rethink and consider shifting and investing into a Safety and Risk Management Software? Should this be the next move to venture in the field of OSH/HSE?
Digitalization is inevitable. The demand for real-time, highly-efficient and resilient processes are increasing, and Safety & Risk Management, like any business processes, are no exemption to this demand. Since Safety & Risk Management is a critical part of a company’s operational strategy and business sustainability, the more reason it should evolve and advance along with the business and technology. Otherwise, if it will not shift, it will be left behind and not serve its purpose of being an asset in the company.
What can automation contribute to the physical workforce of one’s organization especially in Safety and Risk Management?
Automating Safety processes or a Safety Management Software is NOT A THREAT to the physical workforce. Instead, it is COMPLEMENTARY. It enhances and expands the capabilities of the Safety personnel, giving them more tools to do their job better, and giving them more time to do value-adding actions to managing risks, increasing their productivity and overall effectiveness.
Asides from the Fines and Fees form non-compliances from government requirements and the sudden outbreak of the COVID-19 Pandemic that shook the world, what do you think should be the turning point into urging businesses and organizations these days to explore or get to know more about their overall workplace Safety Culture existing in their present management?
The reason for doing Safety should not be merely regulatory compliance or because of a crisis like COVID-19 Pandemic or the Monkey pox virus. The bottom line is, because the company cares for its people. It’s about Ethics and Leadership, and for this, the company should be PROACTIVE in finding and getting the best tools and solutions to ensure their employees’ safety and transform their Safety culture.
What do you think automation together with the physical workforce in organizations these days do to keep up in the vastly changing business management trends and how can they incorporate a more Holistic Safety Management approach and sustain it? (With or without the likes of the Monkey Pox Virus and even after the likes of the COVID-19 Pandemic that we know can happen to us again.)
COVID-19 will not disappear permanently, it will just evolve and become an Occupational Health Risk. This may happen with the Monkey Pox virus. If the enemies we face – the hazards and risks evolve, the more that our weapons - our Safety Management tools and solutions MUST evolve. In order to have a Holistic Safety Management, a company needs to be able to see or envision the FUTURE, prepare for it PROACTIVELY NOW, and address all facets of Safety, not merely Occupational Safety and Health, but its entirety. For a company to be on top of any situation, it should be able to transcend not only the crisis, but the enemy called “the conventional”.
In your own opinion, how do you envision individuals regardless of profession, organizations regardless of their industry and businesses comeback or restart from the remnants of what the ruins of this COVID-19 Pandemic has done to us? What should be their main or immediate strategy in order to do so and how can automation aid it or them?
Remote or online working will not disappear, it will thrive and will create new opportunities. Things will not “return to normal” or “how it used to be”. We have to be resilient, embrace the “new normal” or the “new world” after the Pandemic. The way we do things now with the technology will not downgrade, it will keep on advancing, moving towards the world where technology is no longer OPTIONAL, but ESSENTIAL to our lives. Hence, we should not fight or resist the Digital Transformation, but learn to maximize its potential. For this, we need to reinvent ourselves and shift our way of doing things, our work, or our profession, digitally. A Software or a digital platform, therefore, will be an Essential tool.
In the future, what can you foresee that will happen in an organization’s shift into automation or digitalization? Most especially in the area of Safety and Risk Management. What can you conclude based on your observations or data and in the trajectory that we are being directed to now regardless of the industry. (Both the Negative and Positive.)
Digitalization or automation of Safety & Risk Management would significantly reduce if not totally eliminate the probability of human error, and make the Safety Systems and Engineering highly reliable and robust. There will be Safety Software tailored-fit for a particular process or industry, and with digital tools or devices that are “intelligent”, interfacing with the human user. In the Construction Industry, for example, equipment will become automated or remotely controlled, reducing the risk for a human worker but increasing the precision and accuracy of task completion. In Manufacturing, automation of Process Safety tools for Hazards Identification and Risk Assessments will reduce complexity and lead-time, and could even have predictive models based on data analysis. Hence, Process Safety engineers would be able to prevent high-risk incidents like fires, explosions, and toxic release more effectively. In education, online learning will only evolve into a Digital reality or virtual environment, where the digital space will look like the real physical environment. This will not only resolve the challenges of distance learning now, but even exceed the quality of the face-to-face learning.
According to Charles Darwin, “It is not the strongest of the species that survives, nor the most intelligent; it is the one most adaptable to change.” Therefore, only those who are able to move along with the Digital Transformation will survive and thrive in the business. The same is true for Safety & Risk Management. Those who will not shift, we’ll eventually become obsolete.
