A good workplace safety plan is a comprehensive description of how the company works to create a safe working environment. In Texas, the Texas Department of Insurance monitors and enforces workplace safety by having a hotline available where employees can report unsafe working conditions. Understand the elements that make up a good workplace safety plan to fulfill a corporate obligation to your employees, customers and the law.

Commitment
According to the California Department of Industrial Relations, in order for a health and safety plan to be effective, the company should show commitment to it. The way to do that is assign a health and safety officer who is responsible for administering the program. The health and safety officer needs to have the complete cooperation of the management and executive team. A complete company commitment to health and safety helps employees to feel that the company is concerned for their safety, and makes the program important to the employees as well.

Monitoring
In order for a workplace safety plan to be effective, there needs to be monitoring of the company equipment, work conditions and employee behavior in place. According to laboratory safety magazine ALN, the identification of hazards is an ongoing process that catalogs the safety concerns that come up, what caused them and the solutions that were employed. By using a monitoring system, the company can become better equipped to identify hazards before they happen and have proven solutions in place.

Escape Plan
According to the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees, also know as AFSCME, in order to keep employees safe it is important to develop and practice evacuation plans. These plans include escape routes, the procedures to follow to safely exit the building and what to do when outside of the building. It also includes keeping escape routes available by making sure emergency exits are not blocked, keeping escape lanes clear of clutter and debris, and making sure all emergency signs and lights work.

Regulatory Compliance
A good workplace safety plan follows the state and federal laws for workplace safety. The federal law is administered by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration, also known as OSHA. For companies located in Houston, Texas, there is the Texas Workforce Commission. If an employee feels that he is being forced to work in an unsafe environment, that employee is encouraged to contact either one of these regulatory bodies to file a complaint. Employers are encouraged to go through the workplace safety guidelines for each of these agencies and make sure the company safety plan is in line with the law.
