Any person working outside should use these West Nile safety tips. The West Nile Virus is most often passed to humans when they are bitten by an infected mosquito. If you work near water or with water you are at a higher risk of a mosquito bite. They generally live near large areas of water but can also be found in grassy and wooded areas in the summer. Contractors,farmers,painters,landscapers and roofers also have a better chance of mosquitoes at work than those who work indoors.
The West Nile Virus is a virus that often presents itself with flu like symptoms. While most cases of West Nile are relatively harmless just like the regular flu there are people that become extremely ill from the disease. A person with a mild case of West Nile will feel sick for about two weeks with symptoms that include

Slight fever
Headache
Body aches
Swelling of the lymph nodes

More extreme cases will have symptoms such as

High fever
Stiff neck
Headache
Tremors
Convulsions
Muscle weakness
Disorientation

Tips On Preventing West Nile At Work

1.Always wear bug repellent when working outdoors. To be most effective it should contain DEET but no more than thirty percent. That is the highest amount that can be used safely without injuring an adult worker.

2.When using bug spray it is important to use enough to cover your entire body including your clothes.222

3.Wear long jeans and boots to keep your legs covered.

4.Never leave buckets or contains sitting out with water in them. Also never leave empty containers that could fill with rain water. Mosquitoes love still water and will begin to flock to any they can find.

5.Dawn and dusk are the most common times for mosquitoes to be out. If you must work at these times make sure to use the proper West Nile safety precautions.
