Safety managers must be comfortable in a hands-on position. They will be in an occupation that requires them to be influential and a leader. The safety manager often reports to the human resources department.

Purpose

Safety managers are dedicated to reducing risks and increasing safety awareness while keeping budget costs low.

Policies

Safety managers develop, implement and oversee safety policies, procedures and programs. This position also conducts routine audits to ensure that safety requirements are followed.

Accidents

Safety managers investigate accidents, handle reports and deal with workman’s compensation claims. This position also consults with insurance companies to guarantee that employees are being treated fairly when it comes to compensation.

Location

Safety managers may work solely in their business’ home locale, or they may be responsible for locations across the country. Travel might be a required part of the job.

Requirements

Safety managers are often required to have at least five years of experience in a related field, including a position that required leadership skills. A bachelor's degree in the safety or health field is also a prerequisite. It’s also preferred for safety managers to be bilingual, speaking English and Spanish.
