The assurance of safety in the workplace is an essential function and responsibility of employers. The U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) states that employees have the right to be safe from hazards in the workplace, and employers have the obligation to provide protective measures to maintain their safety. As such, safety management in the office is something to take seriously, because there are many devastating effects that can come from unsafe, or hazardous, work environments.

Significance

Safety in the workplace is a big deal. There are many government agencies that support workplace safety and strive to make employers understand just how important an issue it is. In fact, there are laws that require certain mandated behaviors from employers to maintain safety in the workplace. OSHA and Department of Labor are examples of entities that are invested in assuring employee rights to safety at work. Consequently, employers should understand the laws that protect employees, so that they may take appropriate cautions to reduce workplace hazards, risks and threats.

Types

There are many dangers in the workplace ranging from chemical hazards, to machinery and equipment risks, to violence in the workplace. According to the U.S. Department of Labor, the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) even considers it to be a safety issue when minors (children under the age of 18) are employed in the workforce. Health is another safety category that employers are concerned with when it comes to safety management.

Safety Management

According to the National Safety Management Society, safety management means that a company evaluates safety concerns and comes up with ways to minimize exposure to health and safety threats in the workplace. Safety management functions to keep employees and employers safe. It is an integral part of business, because employers who do not take proper precautionary measures to ensure safety are risking accidents and injuries at work.

Safety Protocols

Employers may adopt safety protocols to institute in their places of work, to increase employee safety practices. Posting signs and symbols for safety risks is another way that employers can warn employees of a potentially hazardous situation. Holding safety trainings at work is a good way to make sure employees are properly trained and educated about their company's safety policies and standards.

Benefits

The Safety Management Group explains that practicing safety in the workplace is beneficial because it keeps staff safe, allows projects to be finished on time, keeps costs low and even enhances productivity. The Safety Management Groups says that by ensuring a safe work environment, employers won't have to deal with all of the costs that are affiliated with accidents and injuries, such as worker's comp claims, legal fees, insurance costs and the general loss of productivity that occurs when employees need to take time off work due to on-the-job injuries.
