Construction safety is important topic that addresses the myriad risks involved in the construction industry and how to minimize them. Construction involves a lot of activities such as roadway paving, excavations, residential construction, demolition and renovations, all of which expose the workers the risks. Construction safety topics analyze those risks.

Safety Equipment

A good construction safety topic is safety equipment because safety equipment, together with safety measures, are what will ensure the safety of construction workers. Safety equipment includes personal protective equipment for eyes, head, face and extremities. Safety equipment also encompasses respiratory devices, protective clothing and protective shields and barriers. Generally, safety equipment should be provided for the workers, used by the workers and maintained in a sanitary condition. The equipment must be free from chemical hazards, mechanical irritants or radiological hazards, which may be inhaled or absorbed into the body through physical contact.

Fire Protection

Fire protection is another construction safety topic. It is the responsibility of the employer to develop a fire protection program that the employees must follow throughout all the phases of the construction and demolition work. In addition to developing a fire protection program, the employer must provide firefighting equipment so that if fire hazards occur, there shall be no delay in providing the needed equipment. Examples of such firefighting equipment include specified fire extinguishers and small hose lines, as well as fire alarm devices. The fire extinguishers and other firefighting devices must be placed in conspicuous locations for easy accessibility.

Medical Services and First Aid

The employer shall make sure that there are medical personnel available for consultation on health matters. Arrangements should be made to ensure that prompt medical attention will be given to any injured worker before the commencement of any construction project. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) requires that someone with a valid certificate of first-aid training from the US Bureau of Mines or the American Red Cross should be available on the worksite to render first aid if the construction site is too remote to easily access an infirmary, clinic, physician or hospital.

Ventilation

When performing construction work that produces hazardous substances such as fumes, dust, vapor, mists and gases, the level of concentration should not exceed OSHA-specified limits. Exhaust fans and all necessary ventilation equipment shall be constructed, maintained and operated in such a manner as to ensure that the velocity of air is sufficient to gather fumes, gases, dusts and vapor away from the workers to suitable disposal points
