Whether they're working in the oil and gas extraction industry or for laboratories, safety specialists analyze workplace procedures to identify potential hazards. They also ensure that their employers comply with all safety standards -- many of which are outlined by the Occupational Health & Safety Administration, or OSHA. While their earnings vary by employer, experience and geographical location, safety specialists made an average of $69,050 as of May 2014, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.

Primary Responsibilities

Most safety specialists collect, test and analyze samples of toxic substances they find in manufacturing plants, hospitals or in the soil or water near residential areas. They also inspect the equipment, ventilation systems and lighting of workplaces to ensure the safety of employees. Many safety specialists create safety policies for workers to prevent injuries, burns or illnesses. Some may conduct training sessions on topics such as emergency preparedness or proper lifting procedures. One of the primary objectives of safety specialists is to increase worker productivity and decrease absenteeism, the BLS reports.

Work Environment

Safety specialists work for a variety of employers, including hospitals, manufacturers, scientific laboratories and government agencies. The BLS reports that in 2012, 32 percent worked for state, local or federal government agencies, such as the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health. Because of certain hazards, such as potent chemicals or flying debris, most safety specialists wear helmets, goggles, respirators and other protective gear to minimize injuries or illnesses.

Education and Qualifications

The minimum educational requirement for a safety specialist is a bachelor's degree in occupational health, safety, engineering, biology or chemistry, depending on the industry. Some employers prefer hiring safety specialists who have completed internships through their colleges or universities, although most train new hires on the job. Other important qualifications are attention to detail, physical stamina and technological, communication and problem-solving skills.

Advancement Opportunities

A safety specialist can advance into a safety-trained supervisor position by gaining one or more years of experience in the field. Safety-trained supervisors hire, train and oversee the work of safety specialists. While certification is optional for safety specialists, most safety-trained supervisors get it from the Board of Certified Safety Specialists, which requires taking and passing a certification exam. Safety-trained supervisors, or occupational health and safety supervisors, earned $76,000 as of 2014, according to the job site Indeed.

Job Outlook

The BLS estimates a 7-percent increase in employment for occupational health and safety specialists between 2012 and 2022, slower than the 11-percent national growth rate predicted for all occupations. Technological advances and the need for compliance with existing and new regulations will increase demand for occupational health and safety specialists. Employers will also hire more of these specialists to reduce insurance and worker's compensation costs.
