Top 8 Wood Working Guidelines

.)Always wear goggles while working with wood. Weather you are using a hand saw or an electric saw there will be pieces of wood particles that get into the air. If even a small piece of wood or sawdust gets into your eyes it can cause permanent damage to your corneas. This could result in lose of vision. If a piece of wood or sawdust does manage to find a way into your eye there are a few things you can do. Immediately flush your eyes out. If there is no eye wash station near you than it is a good idea to keep eye wash solution in a first aid kit near your work area. Use the eyewash solution or eyewash station and then call for medical help.

.)Wearing protective clothing such as gloves will help reduce injuries to your body. While a leather glove will not stop a blade from cutting you it will stop wood chips and splinters away from your hands. Also never wear loose fitting shirts while working with an electric blade. If the sleeve was to get caught while the blade was running you could suffer from serious injuries. You should also wear a face mask to prevent inhalation of sawdust particles which can damage the lungs.

.)Turn off the blade every time you walk away from the machine. If the blade is left on someone could walk by and get hurt cause they were not paying attention. You should make sure the power is off and the blade had come to a stop before you walk away from any electrical saw.

.)Keep your work area clean and free of dirt and clutter. Make sure the floors all clean before and after you use the saw. If there are pieces of wood, boxes or cords on the floor move them before you turn on the saw. Once you are finished cutting your wood the area should be swept to remove all sawdust from the ground. This will help prevent it from spreading around the room and being accidentally inhaled or getting into someones eyes. Never clean the saw while the blade is running. Unplug it than use a small hand held broom to sweep the excess dust and pieces off of the saw.

.)Check all equipment before you use it. Look at the electrical cord to make sure there are no frays, breaks or cuts. Than check the machine for broken, dented or missing pieces. If all of these things are okay the final step before using the wood cutting equipment is to check the blade. The blade should be clean, straight and sharp. If it is bent, dull, cracked or dirty you should change the blade to a new one. A bad blade can make the wood move while you are cutting it or even throw the wood back up at your body. It is not worth risking your health just to get a job done faster. That is why they have wood working safety guidelines.

.)Before the wood goes anywhere near a saw you must check it for pieces of metal pieces, nails and screws that might be lodged inside. If you don’t check and there is something in the wood it can fly out and cause bodily harm to you or others working near you. I nail that is thrown from a saw will have enough force to penetrate bone if it comes in contact with a person.

.)It might seem like a nice idea to have music or a sports broadcast playing over the radio while you are working but it isn’t. The music or game can be distracting and make you lose focus on what you are doing. Also you should avoid conversations with other workers while cutting wood. If you look up at them your hand could slip and cause the wood to move. It is not worth risking injuries just to listen to some music or have a talk. Save those things for your break where a distraction is less likely to cause anyone to be harmed.

.) Don’t try to force a piece of wood to go faster through the saw. The saw is designed to work at a certain pace that is considered safe. Putting pressure on the wood to make it cut faster will only cause it to break.

By following the safety guidelines for working with wood. you will be able to have a more productive and happy work environment. There is no reason to rush wood cutting it won’t save you anytime if you have an accident. Working with wood can be a fun and satisfying job if you do it correctly. If you feel you are under pressure to get a job done in less time than it can safely be done you must tell the person that their expectations are unrealistic. If they want the job done correctly without injuries it cannot be rushed.
