As the summer season continues, recreational vehicles are appearing more and more on the road and for good reason, too. They’re fun, family-friendly and convenient for traveling.  The downside to RVs is they can be quite the gas guzzlers. More importantly, they require a significant amount of upkeep to ensure safety at all times.

If a RV doesn’t have the proper, routine maintenance there will be greater risk to you, your family and others on the road.  Much of this road safety comes down to quality and inspected tires. RVs are massive, which means they have the potential to be of greater harm to other drivers if a blowout were to occur causing a RV to swerve out of its lane into other traffic. Certain precautions can be taken to ensure your RV’s tires stay safe and durable during the traveling season. Prevent blowouts with these RV tire safety tips.

Right PSI

In order to prevent blowouts, make sure to keep the right air pressure in your RV’s tires. This can get tricky seeing as not all tires require the same PSI. The good news is every tire tells you. Check on the outside of the tire for the proper PSI.  While on the road for long periods of time and with much sun exposure, RV tires heat up and expand. While in the off season, there’s a chance that RVs experience the winter season, which means the cold affects its PSI. This is why prior to traveling and during routine pit stops on the road, make sure to check the PSI for safety. Carry an air pressure gauge in your glove box at all times.

Updated Tires

Other frequent blowouts occur due to old tires. At most, change your tires every 5 years. This of course also depends on how often you drive the RV, the distance traveled, how consistent the PSI is for each tire, the conditions you drive the RV in and how often you’ve ran over potholes and other obstacles.  Many factors are involved, which is why you should always keep an eye on the tread and the outside condition of the tires.

Recommended Tires

The best types of tires to use are ones with the highest tire ply. Tire plies are the layers that make up the casing of the tire. These casings usually consist of nylon, rayon and cloth. The higher the ply, the heavier the load a vehicle can carry.

Tire Covers

Tire covers are a great way to protect your tires from the sun. Over time, the sun’s heat rots out your tires creating cracks. If on the road all summer, the tires are going to be taking on quite the summer challenge with the sun’s heat along with the hot summer roads. During long pit stops, throw on the covers to give the tires a break. They can also be used on RVs during the off season, since they will most likely sit in one place for 9 months.

Test Drive in the Off Season

If a RV sits in one location for nine months out of the year, then the cracks caused from the sun could concentrate at the bottom of the tire where there’s the most pressure due to gravity. In addition to using tire covers, take your RV out for routine spins. It’s better for the engine and tires.

Frequent Inspections

Finally, make frequent inspections on the entire wheel area. This includes bolts, wheel alignment and brakes and rotors. Tire safety isn’t just about the tire itself, but the whole wheel system. The smoother and safer this system functions, the smoother and safer your summer RV trips will be.
