People know that chemicals can be harmful and hurt them but many still choose to work without the proper eye protection equipment. A chemical splash even a small one could cause permanent and irreversible damage to your retina and cornea. Once you have lost your vision there is almost nothing that doctors can do to help you get it back. That is why is it important to wear eye protection when working with chemicals.

Chemicals That can Damage Your Eyes
Most chemicals can effect your eyes. Some of the side effects range from minor such as stinging,burning and watering. While others can be much worse such as blindness,burns and abrasions. Below is a list of different chemicals that can injury your eyes.

Ammonia
Chlorine
Bleach
Lye
Solvents

These are just a few of the most common chemicals in the workplace. You can find thousands of products that contain one of these chemicals in some form.

Eye Protection Equipment
There are two different types of eye protection equipment that you can use to help reduce the risk of a chemical getting into your eye while at work.

The first is splash goggles. They are made of a thick plastic and are held on the face with an adjustable strap that goes around your head. Splash goggles are often made to completely cover the front of your eyes as well as the sides. They are great at stopping harmful chemicals from reaching your eyes.

The second form of eye protection equipment for chemicals is known as a face shield. It is a piece of thin plastic that lays over the front of your face. It is usually attached to a band that is place around the top of your head. A splash guard is designed to protect your entire face but it also meant to be worn with a pair of goggles underneath of them.

Using eye protection while working with chemicals is the best way to keep your eyes safe. While March is workplace eye wellness month it is important to practice eye safety all year long.
