Liquid Nitrogen has many uses in the laboratory. It is a very useful and also extremely dangerous chemical. That is why you must follow all liquid nitrogen safety precautions while working with it. One of the uses of Nitrogen are safe storage of blood cells,eggs and sperm. It is also used shrink weld machine parts,clean computer components,coolant in astronomy cameras,cryogenic freezing and as a way to make ice cream. Those were just a few of liquid nitrogen’s many used.

You must use safety precautions with liquid Nitrogen because it can be harmful to humans. Liquid Nitrogen is so cold that it can literally kill your skin when it gets on you. It is generally around -320 degrees Fahrenheit. That is the number one reason you should abide by all Liquid Nitrogen safety precautions.

You should wear personal protective safety gear anytime you work with liquid nitrogen. Goggles will help prevent it from splashing up into your face. Sometimes it is necessary to wear a face mask over your goggles if you are working with large quantities. Protective cryogenic gloves should be worn when handling nitrogen. They will protect your skin from burns that can instantly kill live tissue. Wear a full length apron to block your torso from spills and splashes.

Never pour liquid nitrogen into a container that is sealed. This will cause a build up of trapped gas which can be extremely dangerous.

Any room where nitrogen is present should be well ventilated.

If a co-worker is over come by liquid nitrogen call 911 immediately. It is important for that person to get medical attention.

Nitrogen is so cold that it can cause burns. Cold burns are just as dangerous as normal burn. They may even be worse since they cause the skin to freeze and die immediately when it comes in contact with it.

If it is inhaled asphyxiation can occur. That is why you should wear a safety mask at all times when working with liquid nitrogen.

These liquid Nitrogen safety precautions will reduce the amount of work related injures. You should always practice nitrogen safety in the lab and anytime you must use it while working or at home.
