Safety in the workplace is absolutely integral. Not only is it a right of all employees to feel safe in their work environments, but productivity will grind to a halt if workers do not feel this way. Part of instilling a feeling of safety in the workplace is maintaining open and clear communication about safety. One way to approach this communication is through discussions of interesting safety topics.

Indoor Environmental Air Quality

Indoor environmental air quality affects all employees and is most likely something they've all had some experience with. For example, many employees have had the experience of not feeling completely healthy and exhibiting health symptoms while in the workplace, only to have those symptoms go away when they leave the building. If you bring up this topic at a work meeting, people will most likely have a lot to say about it, voicing their knowledge and opinions about their work environment and any contaminants they believe exist in the building.

Violence

Even if your workplace has never experienced an episode where one employee was violent to others, violence is a subject worth discussing. You could start the discussion with a statistic the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention cite from the Bureau of Labor Statistics that each year from 1993 to 1999, "an average of 1.7 million people were victims of violent crime while working or on duty in the United States." Exploration of a safety topic on violence in the workplace could involve the best ways to react in such a situation, how to recognize the potention for violence and possibly prevent such a situation, and an overall discussion of thoughts and fears about workplace violence.

Stress

Stress is another topic workers are likely to find interesting because most are likely to have something to contribute to the discussion. Although some workers might consider stress just another part of the job, a discussion about stress and the health and safety issues related to stress can benefit many people in your workplace. The workshop leader should encourage employees to share freely about the stresses they deal with and how they manage them. The discussion should include reminders of safety issues related to mismanaged or built up stress and how stress can negatively effect everyone, resulting in migraines, ulcers, depression, malaise and even workplace violence.
