Body
The safety mechanism of a rifle, handgun or shotgun is an integral part of the weapons operating system. The safety of a firearm is designed to prevent the firing pin from moving forward and contacting the primer or base of an ammunition round. Familiarity with the location of the safety on a particular firearm is necessary so that it's used whenever the firearm is being loaded or prepared for use.

Instructions

1.Determine that the rifle, handgun or shotgun is unloaded before proceeding. Always verify that the gun is unloaded and safe before handling in any manner.

2.Familiarize yourself with the firearm and locate the safety mechanism. Look for a rotating lever on many handguns that moves up and down to select the safety. Identify the safety on some rifles by a cross-block mechanism that features a round button that is moved from side to side. Find the forward sliding safety on many shotguns and some rifles.

3.Identify the proper settings for the safety. Look for the letters "S" for safe and "F" for fire on some firearms. Look for a red and white dot on some firearms, with white being safe and red being fire.
4.Hold the firearm so that your fingers are away from the trigger. Always practice handling a firearm with fingers away from the trigger as a safety precaution.
5.Slide, push or rotate the safety, based on the firearm and safety type, so it is toward the "S" or white indicator.
