Safety training – an essential component to overall workplace safety programs – functions as a tool that emphasizes safety’s importance in the workplace and informs employees of their responsibility to uphold safety protocol. Safety programs and their training components can vary depending upon the employer and type of business carried out. Depending upon the workplace environment, business functions and available resources, employers may build training programs in-house or seek the assistance of outside safety professionals.

Instructions

1.Know your what safety standards apply to your business and what hazards to health and safety exist. Sections 5(a)(1) and 5(a)(2) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act -- OSH Act -- require that employers provide workplaces without hazards that can cause serious illness, injury or death and comply with the Act’s standards.
2.Conduct an analysis of your work site. Look for obvious hazards to safety, research and implement corrective action. You may look to your Workers Compensation Insurance provider for guidance in your workplace analysis. You may also seek guidance from the Occupational Safety and Health Administration -- OSHA -- or your state's safety agency, if one exists.

3.Review all equipment used to carry out your business functions and create processes for operating.
4.Identify risks associated with the positions within your organization. OSHA has online resources available to assist employers in conducting job hazard analyses.
5.Draft general workplace and position-specific protocol based upon the completed assessments of the work site, equipment and positions.
6.Determine the methods used to inform employees of safety concerns and to train them in the developed safety protocol. An employer may deliver training in multiple ways including at new employee orientation, when introducing new equipment or processes or on a regular schedule as in monthly or quarterly intervals.
7.Identify employees -- such as a safety officer or supervisors -- or outside safety professionals to deliver safety training.
8.Communicate to your employees regarding safety training. Schedule and conduct training.
