Certified Safety Professionals must go through a series of steps to earn the CSP certificate. The Board of Certified Safety Professionals (BCSP) is the independent organization that regulates the process and requirements, administers exams and provides study materials. The board's goal is to certify only those professionals who have the education, experience and knowledge in the environmental, health and safety (EHS) fields. The CSP certification is often a main qualification to obtain EHS jobs. Top salaries in these fields are typically offered to those holding the certification.

Instructions

1.Apply to BCSP to begin the process of qualifying and preparing for the two required exams, Safety Fundamentals and Comprehensive Practice. Follow the steps on the application (see Reference 3) to determine whether you have the qualifications to begin the process of obtaining a CSP. Gather records that show you have a bachelor's degree in any topic or an associate degree in safety and are currently performing safety duties on your job.
2.Purchase the exams upon notification of acceptance by the BCSP. Note the eligibility period that you have to study and take the exams. Be aware that the exams will not be sent to you. Rather, the board will notify the facility where you choose to take the exam that you are eligible and have paid for the exams.

3.Gather study materials to prepare for the exam. Obtain all the study guides recommended by the board. Get a copy of the Code of Federal Regulations (CFR 29). Read all the materials thoroughly. Make notes or flash cards to review over and over again. Get to know the CFR standards in all safety disciplines. Brush up on your math skills to prepare for exam questions that require calculations. Keep the eligibility dates in mind, but don't rush to take the test until you are confident that you can make a good attempt at passing the exams.

4. Choose a BCSP facility from the many centers around the country and worldwide that give the exams. Schedule a date for your exams. Arrive at the center on time and well-prepared.

5.Pay your CSP dues to receive your certificate after you have passed the exams. Continue to pay the dues each year to retain your certification. Recertify every five years by obtaining 25 recertification points according to the BCSP requirements as of publication.
