It's an understatement to say that workplace safety is an important issue. In fact, it's so important that entire government agencies have been developed just to regulate workplace safety. While your employer is responsible for creating and maintaining a safe workplace, there are many things you as an employee can do to be safe at work. Practice these tips to avoid accidents and injury on the job.

Instructions

Always wear your personal protective equipment. This includes safety glasses, helmets and hardhats, gloves and any other piece of equipment or uniform designed to protect you from the dangerous facets of your job.

Do not operate any equipment that you have not been trained or licensed to use. This includes items like fork lifts and industrial shredders, but it also applies to kitchen equipment, farm equipment and manufacturing machinery. This is one of the most common causes of workplace injury.

Bend and lift correctly. Proper lifting procedure states that you should not crouch over an object to pick it up, but instead you should squat down and use the strength in your legs to lift the object. Improper lifting causes numerous unnecessary back, neck and shoulder injuries each year.

Be familiar with the locations of all first aid kits, fire extinguishers, defibrillators and MSDS sheets. MSDS sheets tell you how to proceed in case you come in contact with a chemical in your workplace. All of these items should be easily accessible and in plain sight. Most importantly, employees should know exactly where each item is located.

Employ the buddy system. Never walk to your car alone at night, or to any unmonitored or dark areas of your building. Always inform someone of your location and intent when stepping out of the office. Avoid being alone with strangers or persons you find suspicious.
