According to a 2008 article in Police magazine, there is a definite relationship between crime and tourism. Tourists--who may be carrying substantial amounts of money and expensive electronic equipment such as cameras, laptops and cell phones--are often in a careless frame of mind and can become an attractive target for career criminals. With a little care, a vacationer or business traveler can increase his security without sacrificing the enjoyment of his trip

Hotel Selection

Some hotels are safer than others. Doors secured with modern electronic locks are more secure than mechanical locks; mechanical-lock keys can be duplicated or lost, but if an electronic key is lost the room can be quickly re-keyed. All guest telephones should have access to an outside line, and room doors should be equipped with a dead-bolt lock and a peep-hole. Access to guest rooms should only be available through the lobby, and there should be fire sprinklers and smoke detectors in the rooms.

The hotel's location is also an important consideration, and the traveler should avoid high-crime areas. A call to the local police department could alert you to a dangerous location, and overseas travelers can contact the U.S. Embassy's Resident Security Officer to find out which areas to avoid.

Security Precautions

On arrival, watch your luggage at all times before and while you check in; don't leave it unattended. If you are a woman traveling alone, consider registering as husband and wife. In any case, you should register without a title that might reveal your gender or profession; a first initial and last name is enough. Avoid ground-floor rooms with windows to the outside.

Once in your room, check the door lock to be sure it works correctly and check windows and outside doors to be sure they are locked. Check the phone and be sure you know how to get an outside line. Always keep your door locked with the deadbolt and safety chain when you are inside, and never prop the door open. If you lose your key, have an electronic key changed immediately, and if you have a mechanical key, request a different room.

Fire Safety

Always keep a flashlight handy in case of fire or other power outage. There should be a fire evacuation plan in your room; if there is not, you should request one from the front desk and study it carefully. Locate the exits from your room and count the number of doors between your room and the exits in case of limited visibility during a fire. Know where the fire alarms are on your floor.

If there is a fire in your room, you should leave immediately and close your door behind you. After sounding the alarm, notify the front desk. Leave by the stairwell; never use an elevator during a fire.

If the fire is not in your room put your hand on the door to see if it's hot. Only open it if it is cool, and then be prepared to close it quickly. You should evacuate the hotel as soon as you can do so safely, but be sure to keep your room key in case egress is blocked and you have to return. If the door is hot, place wet towels or sheets in any openings, turn off any fans, and call the fire department to report your location. Open your window and signal for help.
