Hoisting is an important part of construction work. Heavy objects that can’t be lifted by a person or a group of people often needs to be hoisted by a machine. Since a hoist is a piece of heavy machinery that often lifts objects that weigh hundreds or thousands of pounds OSHA has set hoisting regulations and guidelines for construction work. Following hoisting safety tips will keep all workers on the ground and in the crane safe.

Tips On Safe Hoisting

The hoist must be checked each time before it is used be someone that is trained in hoist safety. There are several different pieces and everyone should be checked for cracks,breaks,tears or normal wear that occurs over time. If a problem is located the equipment should not be used until it can be repaired.

Every hoist has a different load capacity. Make sure to know the maximum amount of weight that can be lifted safely with the hoist you are using.

Check each load twice before you lift it up. Make sure it is secured tightly and no pieces can become lose. If a piece of the load slips or slides out of place the entire thing could fall to the ground and cause massive injuries to anyone below.

Never leave a hoist loaded and hanging in the air. If you are done for the day or even a lunch break either bring it back to the ground of set it in a secured area.

Check the chain before each use. make sure it is not broken or kinked. A knotted chain can get stuck and cause the load to become unstable.

All hooks must be clearly labeled with the max capacity. These will prevent any confusion in the workplace.

Never stand under a loaded hoist. Make sure the area is clear of workers before you begin to lift any heavy objects.

Signs should be posted warning other workers that heavy objects are being lifted in the air.

Only authorized trained employees can operate a hoist.

Hoist are made for equipment and materials. Never let a person ride on the hoist. It can be unsafe and someone could be injured.

Always lift and drop the loaded hoist slowly. Quick movements or jerking can cause the materials to slide out of place and fall.
