Road work has many dangers that youv must be aware of and stay alert at all times. Highway work is considered a form of construction so the statistics of highway work zone related injuries are often grouped together with all of construction jobs. Safety Guidelines For Highway Work Zones

Orange signs that read construction area ahead,slow down and be alert should be posted at least 1000 yards from the actually work site. These signs are used as a warning to drivers that they must reduce speed and drive carefully when in the construction area.

Channelizing devices should be usesd to warn drivers,bikers and pedestrians of the road conditions. Thay should also help direct the traffic around the area in a safe manner. The most common channelizing devices are barricades,cones and drums all which are generally colored a bright orange.

The distance between each channelizing device is to be one foot for each mile of the speed limit. This means in an area where the speed limit is 45 MPH each channel should be at least 45 feet apart.

Blinking warning lights should be used in bad weather such as fog or anytime visibility is lowered. They are required to be 30 inches or more from the ground. You can use warning lights on barricades and warning signs to make them more visible.

All workers should wear a hard hat and reflective safety vest during the entire time they are working on or near traffic.

In certain areas it is necessary to have two men standing on either side on the road work directing traffic. This is most use when you have to close one side of the road completely. Each man should have an orange flag to help direct traffic as well as a walkie talkie to communicate with eachother in order to talk to eachother and prevent accidents from happening.

By following these Safety guidelines for highway work zones you will help to greatly reduce the risk of fatalities and injuries. There is no reason for accidents to occur if each person is doing there best to work safely and use the proper guidelines and safety rules to help them along the way.
