Several organizations enabled by state and federal regulatory agencies offer environmental safety certification. To become certified, an individual must take a course on the specific category they need to be certified in. These are available in classrooms as well as online, where many classes are self-guided. Programs recognized by major organizations usually provide certifications that can fulfill continuing education and career advancement needs. They also enable companies to provide effective safety training to employees.

BEAC Certification

The Board of Environmental, Health & Safety Auditor Certifications (BEAC) is one organization you can seek to obtain the proper certification. The BEAC is recognized by the Council of Engineering and Scientific Specialty Boards, and also maintains an agreement with the American Society of Safety Engineers. Environmental compliance, health and safety, management system and Responsible Care certifications are available. By having BEAC certification, a professional is also qualified for U.S. Department of Energy greenhouse gas emission reporting.

EPA

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) offers environmental training online. The agency runs the OnlineSchoolRoom that lists courses available to the public. These Web-based, e-learning classes are developed by experts and are suitable for job training. Interactive multimedia is used to engage people during the learning process. A choice of continuing education, insurance continuing education and pre-licensing courses are examples of what is offered. Purchase and sign up for courses directly on the site's shopping cart. Once you finish the course, you can print out the associated certificate.

360training

Recognized by the EPA and the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), 360training is a provider of online education for compliance and workplace certifications. Training costs much less than a classroom course. The company has an online library for green building training, which is offered along with National Green Building, Inc., that includes online classes for architects, engineers and construction professionals. The coursework adheres to standards implemented by federal and state regulators. Certificates are provided upon completion of each course.

LEED

Environmental safety certification is also tied in with LEED, or Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design. Governed by the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC), LEED focuses on indoor environmental quality as well as emissions reduction and water efficiency. Project certification for commercial and residential buildings is administered by the Green Building Certification Institute, which also administers professional certifications and exams. The USGBC provides educational opportunities and reference materials on LEED.

Other Types

Environmental safety certification is also available through the EPA's HAZWOPER program. HAZWOPER, or the Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response Standard, applies to employees exposed to or potentially exposed to hazardous substances. This includes people working on cleanup operations and those working in treatment, storage and disposal facilities. In addition to HazMat training, there are also classes offered on asbestos, material handling and storage, storm water management, the Clean Air Act and various legal requirements.
