Construction workers often face serious health risks in the performance of their jobs. Construction work includes a number of areas, such as residential and highway renovation.

OSHA

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration enforces laws and regulations aimed at protecting the health and safety of construction workers. OSHA has issued guidance concerning fall protection measures in residential construction.

Fall Prevention

Residential construction employers must provide workers with certain equipment to prevent falls on site. OSHA regulations specify that employees working at heights of 6 feet or more should be provided with a guardrail, safety net or personal fall arrest system.

Exemption

OSHA exempts traditional fall prevention measures if they pose a greater worker safety hazard. However, employers must document in a written plan their rationale of foregoing traditional fall prevention methods.

Compliance

OSHA enforces construction laws and regulations, including residential construction, by conducting site inspections. OSHA conducts comprehensive site inspections as well as focused site inspections targeting a specific area that poses a safety hazard.
