Classroom safety is paramount in a school. Established guidelines and procedures should exist to ensure the safety of students and faculty alike. There are some standard procedures for classroom safety that can be followed to avoid accidents. Classrooms teaching science have a greater probability of accidents. These classes sometimes contain hazardous materials that are kept for conducting performing experiments. Follow a few simple observations and procedures to make these classrooms totally safe.

Make Sure Everyone Knows the Rules

Provide students with the rules for how to conduct themselves, particularly in science classrooms. Stress the importance of responsible behavior and strict observance of the teacher's instructions. Ask the student to sign an agreement, in which he or she expressly agrees to follow all the procedures stated. Have the parents sign the agreement also agreement needs the signature of the parents also to make them aware of the safety precautions that the school is taking and to ensure that their child follows all the procedures. These student agreements can typically be found in a student handbook, which outlines all of the rules and guidelines.

Science Classroom Safety

Special precautions must be taken in a science room or laboratory environment, particularly for the handling of different apparatus and materials. Students should not be allowed to touch or operate any equipment without specific permission. All activity should be under the observation and guidance of the instructor. Encourage students to ask questions on procedures or directions that they do not understand. The teacher should be vigilant and take notice of any students who are performing their activities contrary to the instructions that were given.

Teachers should immediately look into any breakage of apparatus or spill of a hazardous material, and attend to any injury to the student, even if it looks trivial. Proper first-aid kits and working fire extinguishers should be available at all times in the classroom.

Zero Tolerance for Acting Out

Mischievous behavior should not be tolerated in a classroom, and any kind of practical joke should be strictly dealt with. Most schools have a prescribed punishment based on the severity of the offense and how many times it has happened before. Stick with the established school policy in terms of punishing bad behavior.

Those who are working with young children should be extra vigilant. Children are curious by nature, so the teacher has to be alert to any student trying to find the nature of any substance by smelling or touching. If there are any animals in cages, the students should be instructed not to open the cage door, or handle the animal on their own. Proper hygiene should be maintained while handling animals and the student should be made aware of the dangers of contamination.
