Body
Auto mechanics and others who work on automobiles must exercise a high level of caution. Hazards in the garage or service bay include fire, electrical shock, chemicals and airborne pollutants.

Eye Protection

Mechanics should wear eye protection to prevent dirt, oil or debris from falling into the eyes and block metal fragments when pounding, grinding or sanding. Battery acid and coolants also can cause severe eye damage.

Fire Extinguisher

Engines and electrical components of automobiles can catch on fire while being repaired or if they're damaged. Keep a fire extinguisher that's classified for liquid, grease and electrical fires within reach.

Garage Conduct
Auto mechanics must conduct themselves with safety as a paramount concern. Each job requires expertise and presents a different set of safety risks. A mechanic should never attempt a repair if he's not comfortable with it.

Clothing
Mechanics should avoid wearing loose-fitting clothing that may get caught in moving parts. Long hair should be tied back securely or kept trimmed.

Smoking
Generally, mechanics or bystanders should not smoke in or around the service bay.
