How To Remove A Pool Safety Cover

The Centers for Disease Control lists drowning as the No. 2 cause of death in children under 14. Many of these deaths could be prevented with the use of pool safety covers during the winter. These covers will hold up to 485 lbs. in a 5-square-foot range. If one of these covers is in place, a child cannot fall into the pool. Upon opening your pool for the season, remove the cover, which should take less than 30 minutes.

Instructions

1.Sweep off the top of the pool cover with the swimming pool brush to remove any leaves or debris on top of the cover. Push the material off the cover with strong forward strokes. Clean the leaves from the bristles whenever they become clogged. Spray the cover with a garden hose to remove any leftover residue.
2.Locate the hold-down springs on the side of the pool. There should be two or three of these along each side of the pool as well as one on each corner. Take the removal bar, which is a 3- to 4-foot-long aluminum rod, from the storage bag and place it on one of these hold-down springs with the spring firmly inside the grooved area.

3.Turn the removal bar 180 degrees in a counterclockwise direction to loosen the spring. Begin working on the one side of the pool. Skip the corners and move to the next side. When you have all of the springs on the side loosened, get an assistant to help you.
4.Move your assistant to one end of the pool. Loosen the springs on the hold-down springs on this corner. Your partner must hold on to the end of the cover, which is now loosened, so that it does not fall into the water.
5.Loosen the hold-down springs on the other end of the swimming pool and lay the removal bar aside. Work as a team to fold the cover in half lengthwise. Smooth the wrinkles out of the cover with your hands. Continue folding the cover over in half this way until it is about 3 feet wide.
6.Pick the cover up with your friend's help and lay it on the deck next to the swimming pool. Start at one end and roll the cover tightly. Have your helper hold his end securely so you may roll this cover tightly. Tuck in uneven edges as you go. Continue until you have rolled the entire cover, then place it inside the storage bag and zip the cover closed.
7.Use a 1/4-inch Allen key to screw down the hold-down springs your cover was previously attached to. Insert the key into the groove at the top of the spring. Turn clockwise until the springs are flush with the ground. Remove the Allen key and store inside the storage bag.
