How To Make Safety Glasses Fog-free

Safety glasses are an essential part of safety equipment for many workers, but often they are left unused or discarded, leaving eyes unprotected and vulnerable. There are a variety of reasons for this critical omission. One reason safety glasses are not used is that the user experiences fog on the inside of the lens that either makes it impossible to see or increases other hazards around the worker because of a reduced capacity to see hazards. This fog, created by humid air condensing on the lens, can be quickly eliminated.

Making Safety Glasses Fog Free
1.Purchase safety glasses with anti-fog lenses. Many manufacturers provide safety glasses that already come pre-coated with an anti-fog agent as part of the lens. This type of pretreated safety glass lens is most effective in the elimination of fog on the inside of lenses. Lenses are typically coated in a hydrophobic, or water-repelling, coating that does not allow the droplets of water moisture to settle in the field of vision of the safety glass user.
2.Purchase an anti-fog agent or lens coating for the safety glasses. Anti-fog agents are available in sprays, creams, gels and tissue-style wipes. These coatings can be hydrophobic, as is the case with pretreated lenses.

3.Spit on the safety glass lenses when they are fogged. This old trick used by divers to keep goggles free of fog can also be used on safety glasses. The downside is that spit washes off fairly easily if the safety glasses are wet.
4.Purchase safety glasses with vented side shields. The vented side shield allows better cross-ventilation of the area between the safety glasses and the face, allowing for cooler air and less water vapor accumulation and condensation.
