How To Build An Effective Safety Program

Instructions

1. Commit to workplace safety. The first step in building a safety program is getting a commitment from the company's management to safety and wellness. This commitment should rank high on the management team's priority list. One way of achieving this is to include the importance of workplace safety in the company's mission statement. Management can also demonstrate this by investigating all workplace accidents and encouraging employees to follow all safety procedures.

2. Accept accountability. Management should be accountable by clearly stipulating safety requirements. To build a safety program that requires accountability, employees' job descriptions must be clear and in writing, and must state specifically the issues and requirements regarding safety and health responsibilities.

3. Involve employees. Management should hold safety meetings where employees can voice concerns regarding safety and health issues. A safety board made up of employees can be created to assist in this. The board should meet regularly to discuss procedures and implement changes if needed.

4.Investigate all accidents and incidents. Every incident should be examined with causes determined. Procedures and policies related to the accident should be investigated as well to see if there has been a breach in safety policies.

5. Educate employees. Once a safety program is developed, employees must understand the policies and procedures required in following the program.

6. Evaluate the program each year. Determine the program's strengths and weaknesses. Look for ways to improve safety procedures and ultimately reduce workplace accidents and injuries. Implement new procedures as needed.
