Wire Rope Sling Safety Guidelines

There are going to be times while working that you will be required to use a rope sling. If they are used incorrectly the results can be deadly. It is important to follow all wire rope sling safety guidelines when working with this potentially dangerous equipment. Rope slings are often used because they have the ability to lift heavy loads off of the ground. You can see why you wouldn’t want anything to go wrong with a device that is holding heavy materials many feet off of the ground. When working with wire rope you must be able to decide which type and strength of rope is required to complete your task with injury or incident. Below is a list of wire rope sling guidelines that will help you to work safer.

Wire Rope Safety List

1.The wire rope must be secured by knots.

2.Check the weight allowance on each rope and make sure you never exceed that limit.

3.If there are five broken wires on strand of rope you must immediately discontinue the use of that rope.

4.Check for signs of heat related damage before each use.

5.Check for cracks, deformities and worn wires everyday.

6.If any part of the rope is charred or distorted it should be thrown away immediately.

7.Use the proper clips and clamps that are recommended for each wire rope.

8.Make sure sling is firmly attached before each use.

9.Never bend the sling around sharp objects. This could cause a break or fray in the rope.

10.Do not slide the load across the rope
