A school should be a place for learning, not a place in which students are put in danger. To ensure that all students are safe from injury, schools must regularly conduct safety checks of the school grounds. Parents should also be cognizant of the potential dangers that their children face in school and should consider the school's steps toward preventing avoidable dangers, and preparedness for responding to unavoidable ones.
Secured Entrances Only the main entrance should be unlocked during the school day. If side doors are left unsecured, unauthorized individuals can easily gain access to the school building. Any door that is not looked should be manned to ensure that no one enters the building who may wish the students harm. All doors should also be monitored by closed circuit cameras to ensure that anyone who does gain access is immediately identified and the incident can be responded to promptly.
Visitation Procedure All schools should have a clearly outlined visitation procedure to ensure that the main office is aware of anyone other than teachers or students who is in the building for any purpose. If an outside community member needs to enter the building during the school day, he should be required to check in and be given a visitors pass so that all school personnel know that he is authorized to be in the building.
Equipment Maintenance School equipment must be maintained in proper working order. This includes, but is not limited to, classroom materials such as desks, shelves and electronics, playground equipment and lunch room tables. Any equipment that has become damaged should be replaced.
Safety Drills Regular safety drills must be held to ensure that students know what the do in an event of an emergency. All schools must hold a fire drill a minimum of one time per month. Additionally, drills for response to other geographically common disasters should be conducted regularly.
Safety Supplies All schools should be equipped with basic safety supplies including a first aid kit, several fire extinguishers, science laboratory safety equipment and fire alarm pull boxes. These safety supplies should be checked regularly to ensure that they are not in need of updating and that they will function properly should an emergency occur.
Staff Training All school staff must receive basic first aid training. Training in blood-born pathogens is mandatory in all fifty states. While not mandatory, school staff also commonly receive training in basic resuscitation procedures as well as the Heimlich maneuver. Only trained staff should attempt these procedures, as improper application of the techniques can result in serious injury or death.
