Safety Working Procedures

When you own a business, you want to be sure that your employees are kept safe while going about their daily business. That's why you should implement safety working procedures, to help notify your employees of potential dangers and ways to avoid risk on the job. With a careful look at potential hazards, you can create procedures that keep your employees safe.

Development

Developing safe working procedures may be a group effort with employees and management. First, you need to identify some of the areas of concern, whether it is a certain machine that can be dangerous to use, an area of the office that is unsafe, or an individual project that could pose potential risks. Speak to employees and management about what types of risks they see on a daily basis. You may find that there were some unsafe procedures you didn't know about. Speak with them on ways to reduce the risk for everyone in the company, and how to minimize risk in the future.

Education

Once you've developed safety procedure and protocol for dealing with certain risks at work, you need to inform everyone at the company about the new procedures and rules. You can create warning signs and posters to place at those areas where a risk is imminent. You may also call a small conference together, so that you're able to articulate to your employees the importance of keeping safe at work, and what they should do to lower their risk of getting hurt on the job. Send out a memo to reiterate what you spoke about, and ask that the employees post the memo somewhere in their offices where they can review it often.

Enforcement

If you are being strict about safety, then you should also be strict about safety procedure enforcement. Remembering that it is for your employee's benefit, seek to enforce the safety procedures by penalizing those who don't follow them in their entirety. For instance, you could reprimand someone who refused to wear the proper safety gear while using a dangerous piece of equipment. Enact a "three strikes" rule, where an employee is given two prior warnings about safety protocol before losing privileges or being terminated. Remember that a safety procedure is only as good as those who follow it. Keep your employees safe by meaning business when it comes to their safety.
