Safety Measures For Construction

The construction industry breeds safety and health risks. OSHA, the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration, mandates safety measures for employees and employers.

Struck-By Safety

Struck-by incidents constitute one of the most common injuries suffered by construction workers. In construction zones, the potential for being struck by flying objects, hoisted materials or the remnants of demolition projects are high. As such, OSHA requires that hardhats be worn at all times and workers avoid working beneath machinery that handles large objects, such as cranes.

Noise

Construction machinery and equipment make a lot of noise. OSHA noise standards say that workers must protect their ears by wearing earplugs or earmuffs, so that they do not damage their ears and experience hearing loss. Extreme noise levels also make it difficult to hear other sounds, such as oncoming traffic or the beeping of earth moving vehicles in motion.

Falling

Since fall hazards are serious threats in the construction industry, OSHA makes it mandatory for all work sites to have guardrails or personal fall arrest systems in place when working with heights over 6 feet. Floor holes and wall openings must be covered immediately to prevent others from falling down, or into, the holes.
