Safety and inspection checklists provide a list of items, equipment and facilities that administrators deem safe or unsafe. These checklists also provide administrators with information on when to conduct inspections and where inspections have been completed. During school disasters, safety checklists ensure administrators have checked facilities and teachers have gathered the necessary items from their classrooms.
Playground Equipment
Make note of all the playground equipment at your school, including swings, slides, monkey bars and handball courts. Pull and wiggle chains, anchors and hooks on jungle gyms and swing sets to ensure they are properly in place. Check slides for cracks, loose screws or sharp edges, any damage or loose equipment should be fixed immediately. Ensure that monkey bars contain no sharp edges or cracks that may cut children's hands. Check the surrounding area near playgrounds to ensure all the floor padding is properly secured.
Field and Grounds Safety and Inspection
Canvass the field, checking for holes, cracks, broken glass or sharp objects. Ensure that no dogs, cats, possums or raccoons are breeding and living on the campus by checking behind classrooms, underneath bungalows and inside storage sheds. Ensure that the concrete on the campus is free from broken glass or sharp objects. Check the outside water fountains and faucets for leaks. Be sure to check the fences for any sharp edges or holes.
Facilities Inspection
Inspect the interior and exterior of the cafeteria, auditorium and classrooms to ensure that they are free of any hazards, including any liquids, toys and sharp objects. Ensure the railings next to stairs are secured and are free of sharp edges. If your school's auditorium contains wooden or metallic bleachers, ensure they contain no splinters, sharp edges or loose hardware.
Miscellaneous
Check safety equipment within each classroom, ensuring each classroom has a first-aid kit, including the necessary materials such as flashlights, bandages and water. Make sure that fire extinguishers in each classroom or hallway are properly marked while making note of expiration dates. Check to ensure that hallways and exits are properly marked and that exit lights are working properly. Ensure that all electrical, gas and water valves are properly labeled and in working condition.
