Job Site Safety Rules

Every job site, particularly those in which heavy machinery and equipment are used, should implement job site safety rules. Safety rules help to prevent accidental injury and death of employees and also make sure that equipment is being used properly. Safety rules should be posted in plain view of employees at all time. The rules should be included in new employee packets so that employees know the rules upon employment.

Safety Equipment and Apparel

All employees should wear the protective clothing and equipment designated for their particular jobs. Safety glasses should be worn when working with sharp tools and anything that may include flying objects. Ear plugs are needed for protecting hearing at sites with a lot of loud equipment. If heavy equipment like back hoes or fork lifts are used, employees should wear reflective or bright colored clothing to increase visibility. Hard hats and steel-toed boots will protect heads and feet on job sites that require heavy lifting. Some job sites might require specific safety equipment for individual tasks. Safety harnesses should be used for jobs that require climbing. Employees who climb should also wear safety lanyards on their tool belts to prevent tools from falling out.

Equipment and Machinery Operation

In order to maintain the safest work environment possible, specialized machinery and equipment should only be operated by qualified individuals who have received training and passed tests to prove they are qualified. Operators should be well rested and free of impairment from drugs or alcohol, when working with machinery. Clothing should fit well and no dangling jewelry should be worn because these could get caught in moving parts. Other employees should maintain safe distance from moving equipment and the moving parts of machinery. Equipment and machinery should receive regular inspections to ensure that they are safe for operation. Fire extinguishers should be available within close proximity to all electrical equipment and access should be open at all times. If repairs are needed, only those who are approved to perform repairs should do so; all equipment should be shut down before repairs begin.

Basic Safety

Basic safety rules should be followed at all workplaces, including offices, to prevent accidental injury due to negligence. All materials should be put in their appropriate locations in order to keep walkways and emergency equipment clear. Fire extinguishers should be clearly marked and easily accessible to all employees. All lifting should be done by using the leg muscles instead of the back muscles. Larger loads may require two people to lift. All employees should work to clean up spills immediately, no matter who caused the spill. This will lower the risk of slipping and causing serious injury. Further, each employee should take responsibility to keep his individual work space clean and hazard-free. Employees should also refrain from running in the workplace or engaging in horseplay or other behaviors that are inconsistent with safety rules.
