How To Start A Safety/first Aid Training Business

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) is a government agency which regulates national workplace safety standards. All workplaces are required to offer some OSHA training. Specific industries, like the medical field, are required to provide their employees with a higher, certified level of emergency training which must be renewed regularly. These businesses make up just one segment of the potential target market for a freelance first aid trainer. Read on to learn how to get started in this lucrative business

1.Become certified as a first aid instructor. Training and certification can be obtained through one of the following agencies: American Red Cross, American Heart Association, American Safety and Health Institute, or the National Safety Council. Each agency has its own requirements for achieving and maintaining credentials, so you should investigate each program to choose the one that suits you best. Complete the program and take the certification testing. Once you have passed, you are ready to start your business.
2.Obtain a business license if required in your state. Some states do not require you to obtain a license if you are offering a service and not selling taxable products. Inquire at your local county or state clerk's office to determine what license(s), if any, you are required to obtain and the filing fees for those licenses. If you plan to operate your business under a business name, you will also be required to obtain a DBA (doing business as). This will be required for you to open a bank account in your business name. If you will operate your business under your own name, you will not need a DBA. For tax purposes, you may still want to open a separate business account; discuss this with a certified public accountant to find out the best option for you.

3.Purchase marketing materials. You will need a business card containing your contact information to give to potential customers. You may also consider having a brochure created outlining your services and telling a little bit about yourself. These items can be created at home with desktop publishing software and a color printer, but unless you have expert skills in this area you should hire a freelance graphic designer to create these materials for you. These items will represent your company and you want to them to display your professionalism.
4.Use a phone book to create a potential client list. Dental offices, surgery offices and ophthalmology offices are all a phone call away from becoming clients. Set a goal to call at least five offices a day, every day. With persistence, you will soon land your first client.
