How To Start A Safety Program At Work

Instructions

1. Assemble a safety team comprised of employees and supervisors dedicated to workplace safety and create support for the program. The commitment to a workplace safety program must start at the top with support from the company's CEO. Even though employees may never meet the CEO or members of the board of directors, these individuals must fully support a safety program because it will use company resources and will help them learn about the hazards the employees may encounter.

2. Evaluate the risks in a workplace. Create a list of known safety concerns and risks by inspecting the entire workplace. Then, have members of the safety program interview key individuals in each department to assess its risks. Have employees fill out anonymous surveys to learn about additional risks and safety concerns that the safety team did not consider. Use accident reports from the previous three years to learn which are the most common.

3.Identify ways to reduce each workplace risk with the safety team. Write them down so you can include them in a safety manual. Begin implementing risk reduction strategies right away.

4. Create goals for the safety program that are specific, simple, measurable and realistic. Goals can include having at least five employees feel comfortable enough to report a workplace hazard per week, being free of workplace injuries for one month or having 100 percent participation in employee safety trainings.

5. Create a safety manual that discusses identified workplace hazards, how to minimize their risk and what to do in the event of an accident. The manual should also include safety procedures for large-scale events that can harm workers, such as natural disasters or fires.

6. Provide employee training. Have members of the safety team train employees in each departments about the hazards they may encounter, steps they can take to reduce risks and how to report a risk to a manager or member of the safety team.

7. Offer incentives for employee participation in the safety program. For example, each department can earn points for every day it is accident-free in order to work towards a reward for all the employees in the department. The best incentive programs are those that also recognize employees for individual achievements, such as reducing risks or reporting hazards. Offering department or team incentives, as well as individual incentives will help promote a workplace safety program and encourage teamwork.
