How To Address Safety Issues

In 2009, the Bureau of Labor Statistics recorded 3,277,700 non-fatal injuries or illnesses in private industry and 4,340 fatal accidents in all sectors that were caused by workplace conditions. Many of those accidents could have been prevented by following proper safety procedures. In addition to causing negative consequences for the employee, these accidents cause lost productivity for the company and low morale among the other workers. Informing your employees about workplace safety procedures and keeping it in the forefront of their minds are important steps to preventing workplace accidents.

Instructions

1.Print copies of the safety procedures appropriate for your workplace and distribute them to all of your employees. Ask them to sign a statement saying that they have read and understood the procedures. Be available to answer any questions they may have regarding the procedures.

2.Examine your safety equipment and make sure that it is in good repair. As an employer, you are responsible for any accidents that occur because of equipment that is in poor condition.

3.Train employees on the safety procedures, and require refresher training every six months or every year. This will ensure that employees won't become complacent and start taking dangerous shortcuts on the job.
4.Place signs around the workplace in critical areas that remind employees of the safety procedures. For example, all high voltage areas need warning signs. This will remind employees to be cautious and to use proper safety procedures when working in these areas.
5.Hang a marker board in a prominent area that lists how many days your workplace has gone without an accident. This board will remind employees that they are all responsible for following safety procedures.
6.Offer rewards, such as a catered lunch, when employees hit a critical number of days without a workplace accident.
