Electrical Safety Lessons
Electrical safety can be taught to adults and children using tools on the internet. Several online games exist to teach children about electrical dangers such as using electrical appliances while standing in water or overloading electrical outlets. Lessons for adults regarding safety are also available, including virtual fire drills and safety checklists, electrical symbol charts and electrical safety regulations.
Electrical Safety Foundation International
The Electrical Safety Foundation International (ESFI) hosts a website with many electrical safety lessons and activities. This site has a virtual house that highlights electrical safety concerns, as well as a virtual fire drill. There is a Kids' Corner, with lessons, printouts, and several electrical safety interactive games. In the Resource area of this website, you can find downloadable brochures in Spanish and English, student activity sheets and electrical safety tips. This site addresses issues of home, workplace and public electrical safety and has an online store that sells coloring books, DVD's, workbooks and safety stickers.
Electricians' Toolbox, Etc.
Electricians' Toolbox, Etc. offers a series of online lessons with graphics and clear instructions. The topics they cover are general electrical safety, fuse removals, groundfault circuit interrupters, electrical shock, first aid, lock out/tag out, clothing and personal equipment, fire safety and hazardous locations. This site also has a wealth of electrical information such as electrical standards, Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) regulations, rules of thumb and electrical symbols.
Oklahoma State University's Electrical Safety Website
Oklahoma State University's Environmental Health and Safety Department hosts an informative electrical safety website that includes learning modules with useful graphics and detailed information. This site includes lessons about electrical safety statistics, accident and emergency causes, codes and regulations and safety suggestions. A quiz at the end of the lesson modules is intended for employees at Oklahoma University, and thus answers are not included, but the quiz can serve as a useful review for lessons learned.
Frankenstein's Lightning Laboratory
The Miami Science Museum hosts a fun interactive website for children called Frankenstein's Lightning Laboratory. Kids click on one of the characters in the picture, and then a story of the dangers of their behaviors, in relation to electrical safety, are discussed. Prongs in electrical outlets, forks in toasters, kites in electrical storms and electric use and water are all made into colorful lessons on this site.
