Certified Occupational Safety Specialist
Occupational safety specialists evaluate workplaces and recommend measures to increase and maintain safety for employees and the public. Certified professionals must participate in continued training to remain relevant in their field and maintain certification.
Certification
Certified by the American Petroleum Institute and the American Council for Construction Education, the Certified Occupational Safety Specialist (COSS) program provides training to professionals responsible for coordinating and managing an organizations' safety programs. Professionals seeking the COSS designation must participate in a week-long course that includes assignments and culminates in a final exam.
Continuing Education
To maintain credentials, COSS certificate holders must apply for recertification every three years and provide documentation of at least 60 hours of relevant professional development activities. Classroom or online training on topics such as chemical awareness, safety systems and Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) regulations may count toward recertification.
Providers
Safety organizations such as the United Safety Council and Safety Council as well as the OSHA Training Institute offer online training opportunities for safety professionals. COSS certificate holders may also contact the COSS program prior to taking an online course to ensure acceptance.
